The Art of Un-Becoming: Finding Your True Self
In a world that’s constantly loud with opinions, trends, and expectations, it’s easy to lose yourself. Too often, we pick up hobbies, interests, and even lifestyles simply because the people around us are doing them. You meet a new friend who loves hiking, suddenly you’re climbing mountains every Saturday. Your colleague is obsessed with yoga, now you’re buying mats and signing up for classes you don’t even enjoy. But deep inside, you may be asking yourself: Do I really like this—or am I just blending in?
The truth is: if you don’t know who you are, the world will gladly hand you an identity. Society, culture, friends, even social media will try to tell you who you should be, what you should like, and what path you should follow. And if you’re not careful, you’ll end up living a life designed by everyone else but you.
Why Self-Discovery Matters
Self-discovery is the process of peeling back the layers of influence to uncover your true desires, values, and passions. It’s about asking:
- What makes me genuinely happy?
- What do I enjoy when no one is watching?
- What activities drain me, and which ones give me life?
When you discover who you are, you gain freedom. Freedom from comparison, freedom from false expectations, and freedom from being shaped by other people’s definitions.
The Danger of Borrowed Identities
Adopting other people’s hobbies or lifestyles isn’t always bad, it can help you try new things. But the danger comes when you never pause to reflect on whether those things align with your true self. You risk becoming a watered-down version of everyone else, instead of a vibrant expression of who God created you to be.
Steps to Start Your Self-Discovery Journey
- Spend Time Alone – Learn to enjoy your own company. Silence has a way of revealing truths about yourself.
- Try New Things (Intentionally) – Explore, but reflect afterward. Did you love it, or were you just tagging along?
- Listen to Your Inner Voice – Pay attention to what excites you and what feels like a chore.
- Define Your Values – What matters most to you? Integrity, creativity, service, freedom? These will guide your choices.
- Set Boundaries – It’s okay to say “no” to what doesn’t align with who you are.
Becoming Authentically You
Individuality is powerful. The world doesn’t need duplicates; it needs originals. You are here for a unique purpose, and you can only fulfil it by embracing who you are. Self-discovery is not a one-time event—it’s a lifelong journey. The more you grow, the more you learn about yourself.
So stop living on autopilot. Stop letting others dictate your hobbies, passions, and identity. Take the time to know yourself deeply, because when you stand firm in who you are, no one else can convince you otherwise.
