What to Do When You Don’t Know What to Write

We’ve all been there. The journal is open, the pen is in hand… and the brain? Completely blank.

But writer’s block doesn’t mean you’re empty. It means your soul needs a little prompting.

Here’s what to do:

Start with a feeling.
Ask: How am I feeling right now? Write one word. Then build from there.

Use simple sentence starters:

  • Today I need…
  • I’m struggling to…
  • God, show me…
  • I wish someone would…
  • The last time I felt peace was…

Write to God, not about yourself.
Turn it into a conversation. Say: “Lord, I don’t even know what to write today. But here I am.”
Even that honesty unlocks breakthrough.

Doodle, pray, quote a verse.
Journaling doesn’t always have to be full paragraphs. A doodle, a Scripture, or a short sentence can still hold power.

The goal isn’t perfection, it’s presence. The more you show up, the easier it gets.
Eventually, that blank page won’t intimidate you. It’ll invite you.
